EDUCATION BOARD.

An ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education was held at the Board’s offices on Wednesday morning. There were present—Mr. Pharazyn (in the chair), Messrs. Bunny, Toomath, and Hutchison. With a slight alteration, regarding the contribution by the settlers to the erection of a school at Eeatherston, the minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. TAITA SCHOOL. Mr. Toomatu stated that he had received a letter from the master of the Taita school, who informed him that he had been desired by the Inspector to impart the higher branches of education to those of his mope advanced pupils. The teacher wished to know what remuneration he would receive. The members of the Board being entirely ignorant of any such arrangement, the letter was ordered to stand over till the return of the Inspector, who is on a tour of inspection in the West Coast districts. TENDERS. The Secretary informed the Board that tenders had been received for the erection of schools at To Aro, Makara, and Ohariu. The lowest tender for the Te Avo school was that of Messrs. Halley and Ewing, viz., £703. £I2OO had been voted by the Board for school purposes in Wellington city, and of that sum £■loo had been spent in the purchase of a site in Te Aro, and £2OO on other schools, leaving £6OO to be dealt with.

There being a difference of opinion as to whether the site purchased was a suitable one, the tender was not accepted, and the matter was held over.

Eor the erection of the Makara schoolhonse the •‘’tender of K. Macdonald (£253) was by far the lowest. If he were allowed to use the timber of the old lunatic asylum at Karori in the construction of the building, he would be prepared to erect the structure for £I I S. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee.

Sir. Toomath expressed his willingness to enquire into matters concerning the erection of a school at Ohariu, and the* subject was accordingly held over. The tender of Messrs. Harrison and Co., of Masterton, for the erection of a schoolhonse at that township, was accepted. The amount of the tender is £193 4s.

Mr. Patou’s action, in accepting tenders for the erection of a school at Creytown, and the conversion of. the old building into a teacher’s residence, was approved of by the Board. Mr. Wallace was the , successful tenderer for the school, at £325 ; and Mr. Allen, at for the conversion of the old school building into a teacher’s residence.

The tenders of Messrs. Bussell and Suclgrove, for additions to the Morton school, being almost identical in amount, the matter was referred to the discretion of the local committee. Tenders for repairs to the Wainuiomata school, to the amount of £22, were accepted by the Board. GLADSTONE. A letter from Mr. Marsh Bailey was received, which apprised the Board of the election of a local committee for the Gladstone district. The Board ratified the appointments, and empowered the committee to call for tenders for the erection of a sclioolhouso, £lO having been volunteered by the residents of the district. MOKOA SCHOOL. The local committee selected by the settlers of the Moioa was approved of, and £IOO voted towards the erection of a schoolhouse. CLOCKS. The question of furnishing clocks to the Board’s schools was deferred to the next meeting. SCHOOL EESERVES. A letter, requesting the Board to contribute its share towards fencing,an educational reserve at the Moroa, having been read, Mr. Toomath remarked that he thought it desirable that the Board should be empowered by the Provincial Conned to dispose of any of the educational reserves with which it had been invested. One large reserve would have been much more desirable and more serviceable than a number of small ones. Mr. Benny said, at the time the reserves were set aside, the opinion obtained that a number of small sections would he found to he more useful than one large reserve. ASSESSMENT, The appointment of assessors, and the matter of assessment generally, was held over till next meeting. JOHNSON VILLE. The inhabitants of Johnaonville requested the Board to build them a new school-house. Tenders for the work were ordered to be called for. TEACHEIIS’ AND TOTXL TEACHERS’ SALAME3. Mr. Toomath signified his intention of asking the Board to ro-consider the question of teachers’ and pupil teachers’ salaries. He was willing to pay the teachers as much as possible, for their duties were onerous and ill reqnioted at best; but he thought the Board’s disbursements were quite equal to its revenue. . He would inquire as to the remuneration paid to teachers in, the other provinces, and collect data before that day week, when he would ask members to again raise the subject. Several matters of detail having been arranged, the meeting adjourned till Wednesday morning next.
