There were numerous excursions, although the day was not observed as a holiday. The Colonial Bank has secured the premises recently vacated by the National Bank, and will commence business shortly. At the Horticultural Autumn Show to-day there was a very “largo collection of excellent exhibits, especially of fruit. Miss Christian, the distinguished contralto vocalist, proceeds to Wellington by the Taranaki to-morrow, to fulfil a Southern engagement. Grahamstown, Wednesday. At the inquest .on Pox, the victim of the Queen of Beauty mine accident, the jury returned a verdict that Robert Pox lost his life by accident, and such accident was caused by neglect on the part of those whoso duty it was to see that the work was carried out with safety to the mon employed ; also, the opinion of the jury is, that had sufficient supervision been exercised the accident would not have happened. It came out in evidence that 100 feet of driving and 30 feet of sloping had been done without any timber, which was only being prepared for when the accident occurred. Sir George Grey is announced to address the Thames electors on Friday night, as to the Superiutendeney. To-day is a general holiday. Claims aro protected at Ohinemuri, and many minors came down last night.
Tauranga, Wednesday. The Luna arrived last night at ten from Maketu. Sir Donald McLean is still travelling coastwise, interviewing the natives. The annual regatta takes place to-day, and high holiday is being kept. .Maketu, Wednesday. The Native Minister was engaged all day in receiving deputations from different hapus of the Arawa. Wanganui, Wednesday. The leases of the wharves and bridge were sold by tender yesterday. The former brought £650, being an increase of £250 j the latter £2OOO, an increase of £IBO, although some tolls have been reduced. Gheymodth, Wednesday. The Hurdle Race fell through. Betting at the start : Tambourini against the field, Nelson, Wednesday, 7.50 p.m. A fire broke out half an hour ago, and is now blazing, in the stables of Cooksey, a carter, in Trafalgar-street. The brigade turned out quickly, and with difficulty saved Twist and Gay’s large livery stables, the end of which twice caught fire. The building in which the fire broke out was entirely destroyed, and another next to it. Much alarm was occasioned. Dunedin, Wednesday. The Mataura has cleared for London with a cargo valued at £101,710. Of this 4401 bales of wool are valued at £IOO,BOO. tip to date 46,471 bales of wool were shipped Home in the 1874-5 season.
Mr. J. L. Gillies, M.H.E. for Waikouaiti, has resigned his seat. Mr. George McLean is ■likely to bo returned unopposed. Ngai-o and Earl of Lynne are now much fancied for the Dunedin Cup. Peter Branigan, late second mate of the Sampson, died suddenly this morning. Benjamin Jordan, a sailor on board the lighter Nightingale, was struck by the boom as the boat was proceeding down the harbor, knocked overboard, and drowned.
