It is difficult to realise the idea, but it is none the less the fact, that in thirty-seven years the annual export of wool from Victoria has grown from oil to 265,510 bales. Authentic returns show, that in 1813 the total export from that colony was the small quantity already stated, while we have the excellent authority of Messrs. Goldsborough, of Melbourne, for saying that in 1871 the shipments had grown to over a quarter of a million of bales of wool, the value of which was six millions sterling. To that figure also, has to he added the value of the tallow, hides, sheepskins, and other animal products now shipped so extensively to England.
A private company in Erauce have undertaken the construction of a railway tunnel under the English Channel from France to England. A Bill to sanction the undertaking has been presented to the National Assembly. The company undertake to complete the work without assistance from the State.
