Thursday, Mabck 11. Present—The Chancellor, the Vice-Chan-cellor, Key. Mr. Andrew, Rev. Mr. Buddie, llev. Mr. Johnston, Hon. Mr. Stokes, Mr. Curtis, and Mr. Gisborne. The minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed, A letter from the secretary to his Excellency the Governor was read, stating that Sir James Fergusson had written to England applying for a charter for the University. The Government were requested to call the attention of Mr. Vogel by telegraph to the fact that an application was made by Sir James Fergusson for a charter for the University, and that no answer to the application had been received. The following report of the committee appointed to revise the statutes and regulations was brought up:— {< Your committee recommend that the existing regulations and statutes of the University be repealed, .saving existing rights, and that new regulations and statutes be made in lieu thereof.

Your committee, in accordance with this recommendation, present a series of statutes and regulations for adoption by the Senate.” The report was received, and the regulations and statutes proposed by the committee considered seriatim. The Senate agreed to the following statutes and regulations:— 1. Statute repealing existing statutes and regulations and saving existing rights. 2. Statute concerning Government and discipline of the University. 3. Regulation distinguishing statutes and regulations by short titles, and permitting them to he cited by such short titles. 4. Regulation as to form of proxies. 5. Regulation as to blazon of University seal. 6. Regulation as to admission of undergraduates from other Universities. 7. Regulation as to admission of graduates in arts, medicine, law, and music, and others to ad eundem degrees. 8. Statute as to conditions as to the affiliation of Collegiate or scholastic institutions. 9. Regulation prescribing examinations in affiliated institutions.

10. Regulation specifying nature and tenure of scholarships, and subjects and conditions of scholarship examinations. 11. Regulation specifying conditions of matriculation examination, and subjects for matriculation examination.

12. Regulation specifying the terms to be kept and examinations to be passed for the B.A. degree. 13. Regulation specifying conditions to be fulfilled and examination to be passed for obtaining honors. 14. Regulation specifying the proceedings necessary for obtaining degrees in music. 15. Regulation permitting certain teachers to proceed to the B.A. degree. 16. Regulation specifying the conditions to be fulfilled for obtaining the Bowen prize.

The Chancellor was directed to write to the Colonial Secretary, requesting that the Chancellor’s letter of March 5, 1875, forwarding a copy of a regulation for the approval of the Governor, might he cancelled and returned.

In the consideration of the regulation specifying the terms to be kept and the examinations to be passed for the B.A. degree, it was moved by the Rev. Mr. Buddie, and seconded by the Rev. Mr. Andrew ;—“That all words after the word ‘ university ’ be left out,” upon which the Senate divided :—Ayes—Rev. Mr. Buddie, Rev. Mr. Andrew ; noes—The ViceChancellor, Rev. Mr. Johnston, Hon. Mr. Stokes, Mr. Curtis. The resolution was consequently lost. The foregoing statutes and regulations were ordered to be transmitted to the Colonial Secretary, for the approval of his Excellency the Governor.

The Senate adjourned. Fiudav, March 12.

Present ; The Chancellor, the Vice-Chan-cellor, Hon. Mr. Stokes, Rev. Mr. Andrew, Rev. Mr. Johnstou, and Mr. Curtis.

On the motion of the Rev. Mr. Andrew, it was resolved that in the regulation specifying terms to be kept and examinations to be passed for the B.A. degree, section V., clause S, “ Physical Science,” the word “ one” should !je erased and the word “ two” substituted in lieu thereof. The Chancellor was directed to affix the seal of the University to the statutes and regulations, or any of them, passed during the present session, so soon as they should receive the approval of the Governor. It was resolved that the secretary of the affiliated institutions shall forward to the Registrar of the University the names of the students jrassiug at their respective institutions the matriculation examinations, together with the date of their passing. And that in the month of January in each year the Registrar of the University publish the names of all students matriculated during the past year together with the date of their matriculation. The Chancellor was directed to obtain from some bookseller of repute in the colony a satisfactory undertalcing to supply on demand the books recommended as text books of the Senate ; also such books as may be from time to time indicated as subjects for examination, and that in the event of inability to obtain such undertaking, means ought to be taken in accordance with a resolution passed to that effect in the session of 1873, for ensuring a supply of such books for the students and other members of the University. The following additional regulations were made : Regulation appropriating funds for the purpose of the University. Regulation prescribing form of diploma for graduates. Regulation proscribing fees payable to the University. These regulations were also ordered to be transmitted for the approval of His Excellency the Governor. The following report of the committee appointed to consider amendments in the University calendar was brought up. Your committee report that the alteration, recommended to be made in the present calendar were as follows : To insert the regulations passed during the present session on approval of the Governor. To insert under the head of ad eundeni degrees the Christian names in full of the ad eundem graduates and the universities at which their degrees were originally taken. To specify the teaching staff of the several affiliated institutions, distinguishing the professors, lecturers, and masters. For these purposes the committee recommended that the Chancellor be requested to make the required alterations as soon as he shall have received the necessary information. The report was received and adopted with an addition, to the effect that in the list of officer's of the Senate the degree in the University of New Zealand should be added after the name of any graduate in such university. The report of the committee appointed to draw up a report of the proceedings of the Senate for the present year was adopted. The appendices to the memorial of the Canterbury and Otago professors were further considered, and it. was resolved that the words “ Appendices A. B. 0. and D.” be struck out ; that the whole should be entered in the calendar after the regulations and statutes with the heading “ Recommendations and Announoemonts,” and that the details of subject for junior scholarship examinations should be the first subdivisoa thereof.

The list of subjects under the head “ Details of subjects for junior scholarship examinations” was agreed to, and a number of alterations made in the details of subjects for the matriculation examinations, and for the ordinary B.A. examination. Some alterations were also made in the details of subjects for the honor examination, and the Senate adjourned. At Saturday’s sitting, there being no quorum, the Vice-Chancellor adjourned the Senate till Monday.
