CANTERBURY MARKETS/ Messrs. P. Cunningham and Co., exporters, report as follows: ' Christchurch, March i. Since our last circular we have t'o report that most oi our crops have been harvested in line condition, and the quality of both wheat and oats will give entire satisfaction to our customers. Wheat fit now beginning to come forward freely, but farmers very reluctantly accept the rates offered I>y exporters, and a great many aro shipping and storing on their own account in preference to selling in this market. A few early shipments have been made at rates in excess of present quotations, owing to com petition by our local millers, who were bare of stocks, but now that they are fairly supplied, rates have receded, and present quotations may be considered fairly established, unless anything unforseen should happen to upset our judgment. Tho threshing returns are on the average. moßt satisfactory, and farmers will in a measure be compensated by good yields for the low prices as compared with last season. Oata.—The acreage of this cereal is large, and tho yields above average expectations. Competition for the first deliveries was very keen, but the demand has now in a measure subsided/and prices have receded some considerable extent. We do not anticipate any further decline in value, and we are of opinion that quotations lUito if lttid inat abcmt P"»ent m.? a M^7 U 1 r ,u le , hlgh ln , our malket t" ls >»»son, and 2?„;5 endawi " have to increase their limit* before Tates for^t 8 °5 d(ir9 ' , IJr<JW «» <"<> K'ving extreme S S„ a „i, g l 00d "?'»P le »' and 'armersaro not disvi.l.l lm« h„„? l "O, 1 ?^ 0 tta ™> anticipated, and tho yield has been considerably diminished through the "'* " Ua,Uy may bB 0 " Kye-graaa seed is scarce, owing to such a large quantity hay ng got spoilt during the rains inXSariy part of the season A large local demand exists for this article, and rates will rule high all the season.

Every description of timber for building purposes is very difficult to place, especially V.D.L., which is quite a drug m this market. We note the sale of a cargo consisting of palings, shingles, and assorted sizes timber, at equal to 12s. Sd., ship's side, duty paid—this is a fall of equal to 5s lOd. per 100 ft., as compared with sales effected in cargo lines in December last. New Zealand timber is also dull, and sales cannot be made without leaving a large loss to shippers. We should say that our market is fully supplied with all descriptions of timber, equal to requirements, for tho next four or five months. ... Galvanised iron is in demand, but this market is bare of stocks. . Cement is also wanted, but stocks are at very low ebb. Slates.—Demand limited ; stocks heavy. iT TELEGRAPH. AUCKLAND. Monday.
