EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the E duoation . Board was held yesterday. Present : Hon.. C. J. Pharazyn (in the chair), Messrs. Toomath, Bunny, Bowes, and Hutchison.;' <•

The business transacted was chiefly of a routine character, as follows : A tender for the erection of a teacher’s residence at Grey town was received ; 1 but as "it was not accompanied by plans and specifications, the matter was deferred, pending their receipt. A plan 'of the new Foxtori school was submitted and approved, and the thanks of the Board ordered to be forwarded to Mr. Stewart for the trouble he had .taken in the matter. •The local committee at Featherston were authorised to call for tenders for additions to the school, as per plans'and specifications forwarded to the Board. ’ A local committee for the Taratahi district was nominated.

; A petition from the inhabitants of Turakina, conveying an offer to remove the present schoolhouse ,to the site'recently purchased by the Board, was acceded to, the Secretary being instructed td take, steps for the disposal of the old site previously gifted by Mr. Wilson. A general plan of teachers* residences Suitable’ ; for ; country districts, was submitted 1 by Mr: Toxward, and approved, instructions being given that tracings from .the plan were to be taken, and forwarded to the several localities where residences were required. Applications for extension of leases of educational reserves were received, but the Board expressed its, unwillingness to extend l the time beyond fourteen years.. Mr. Mowbray, of the Sydney-street school, having: addressed the' Board in: reference to tho inadequacy- of the remuneration,’ according to the scheme of the Board, for instructing pupil teachers, notice of motion was given .by Mr. Toomath that, at the next meeting,'-he would move that the Scheme'of the Board be reconsidered.

Tho'master of the ’Lower Hutt school complained of certain defects in the school building; which he was instructed to remedy, at the cost of the Board.

A number of complaints having been received, as to the inaccessibility of the new site purchased for a schoohouse at Te Aro,and another site, facing haying been offered to the Board, it was thought that the interests of the locality would be better, served by adopting the latter. Xh the meantime the'matter was referred to Messrs. Bunny .and Tppmath, r for their report.’ 1 f

Mr. Andrew haying informed the Board, by letter, that, more than one suitable site for a school and teacher’s residence in the Castle Point district had been offeree! to him, he was authorised -to take such steps as seemed best for all parties. • : ‘ ; ' f ‘ '

The settlers’ of the Paver 1 Bank district having petitioned ■ to r ‘ have the school ‘ there restored to its former; full time footing,, the Secretary was instructed, to ascertain whether the settler's would contribute towards the extra expense, until such time as the attendance warranted the outlay.Mr. Hdtchison informed the Board that the Bonny Glen settlers living between- Morton and Turakiua, were willing to grant the use of the church for a school, until a schoolhouse could be erected, and requested that Mr. Hair might'be appointed schoolmaster, in accordance with the wishes of the settlers. The Board decided to accede to the request as soon as a successor could be found to fill Mr. Mair’s present position. The settlers of Porewa applied to have a sohoolhouse erected in their neighborhood, stating that they were willing to grant a free site. The matter having been previously before the Board, and as the settlers had hitherto been unable to agree as to a site or anything else, the Secretary was instructed to collect fuller particulars in reference to the present application than wore at hand. The stun of £l6 was authorised to be expended on some necessary repairs at the Tawa Elat school. " The Board then adjourned. -
