CAXTONIAN CRICKET MATCH.
A cricket match between two elevens —one representing the New Zealand Times office, and the other the Government printing office —was played on Saturday afternoon on the Basin Reserve ; Mr. Bromly acting as umpire for the Times, and Mr. G. Tattle for the other team. Some of the batsmen on both sides exhibited considerable proficiency, and for a time defied the bowling. The Times team, having lost the toss, were sent to the wickets, Ludford and Everitt being the first to handle the bat, to the bowling of Messrs. Milstead and Watkin. After some slight exhibition of skill, The Times team , retired, scoring 82. The newspaper men then took the field, with Milstead and Grey at the wickets, to the bowling of Ludford and McKenzie. The Government team eventually retired for 66; Yeomans, who made 9, being the highest scorer. A second innings was played, but there not being, time to finish both,, a victory was declared for the Times. The fielding of the winning side was very good; and their wicket-keeper (Mr. Dunn) proved himself “ the right man in the right place.” At the conclusion of the match it was decided to play again at an early date. The following are the scores of the first innings of each side, on which the game was decided :

It took place in the Panama Hotel, ’ and a company of over forty assembled, under the Presidency of Mr. Thomas McKenzie, Amongst the guests were Mr. Didsbury, Mr. Scales, Mr. Costall, and others ; while letters of apology for absence, occasioned by iE-healtb, were read from Mr. Creighton and Mr. Bromley. Mr. Light placed a remarkably good dinner upon the table, and it was thoroughly well enjoyed after the exertions of the day. After the usual loyal toasts, the Chairman proposed the special toast of the evening, with a few appropriate remarks, in which he touched upon the great importance .of outdoor exercise, such as cricket, boating, &c., for - men whose avocations were of- a sedentary character. He also took occasion to point out the good effects of such meetings, in the promotion; of friendly relations, and the cultivation of a good understanding between members of the same craft. Some excellent recitations were given in the course of the evening, and several good songs were sung, the “ companionship,” in fact, developing quite a musical talent. The festivities were prolonged to a late hour. A special compliment is due. to Mr. Light for the. manner in which his guests were entertained, and before the company left the health of-the host and hostess was given amidst great applause. ,
