A return in the Gazette of the Ilth instant shows the transactions of the Post-office Savings Banks of the colony during the quarter ending December last. The total number of offices open at the end of the year was 103, or seven more than in December 1873. The number of orders issued was 16,331, as compared with 13,709 in the corresponding period, of the previous year, the sums represented in the two quarters respectively being £68,136 18s. 9d., and £56,241-9s. lid.—thus showing the large increase of, in round numbers, £11,895. The number of orders paid was 11,575, representing £48,864, as compared with 9726, and £40,095. The number of accounts opened was 2515, and in the corresponding quarter 1772 ; those closed were 1743 and 944 respectively. There .were 12,857 deposits, and 8670 withdrawals ; the numbers in the same months of 1873 being 9813 and 5871 respectively. The total amount of the deposits was £174,179, as" compared with £148,327, but; the withdrawals were not less than £166,246, as against £112,854 —the excess being due to the action of the banks in’ offering higher rates of interest than are paid by the Government for deposits for fixed dates.
