RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Monday, Febedaky 8. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M.) VAGRANCY. Emily Bridges, when charged with this offence, made the prompt rejoinder, " I am no vagrant." Sergeant Monaghan gave evidence to the effect thatthe prisoner had been wandering about the town the greater part of last week, evidently having no visible means'of support. Her father came into town from Johnsonville, and endeavored to induce her to return to her home, but his entreaties were to no purpose. She then borrowed a horse, and made her way to the Upper Hutt, where she hung about for a day or two. Amongst other vagaries, she took forcible possession of a horse after losing one she borrowed from Jackson's livery stables, and was finally arrested by Constable Lyster and brought to town. Upon the application of Insi>ector Atchison, prisoner was remanded in order that her parents might be communicated with. ARCADES AMBO. . Mary Portelli and Elizabeth Downey, charged on remand with being illegally on the premises of Messrs. Pascoe and Co., were dismissed, with a caution, having been eight days in gaol. SUNDAY TRAFFIC. David Max was charged with driving sheep through the streets on Sunday. Defendant Btated that he had endeavored to get the sheep into some paddock on his way down from the country, but being unsuccessful, he was obliged to bring them on to town. Dismissed with a caution. breach op destitute persons act. W. J. Taft appeared to answer the charge of deserting his wife and children. Defendant stated that he had no intention whatever of deserting his family, and that he had sent them money whenever he could. He was willing to take charge of them now if the Bench dismissed the case, and upon this understanding the case was adjourned io? a week, to give the parties time to become reconciled.
