In our obituary columns will be found recorded, writes the New Zealand Herald of the 3rd iust., the death of Mr. John Anderson Gilfillan, a colonist of long who for many years conducted an extensive business in Auckland. The deceased gentleman, who had been ailing for some time past,, died on Monday last in the fifty-fourth year of his age. Mr. Gilfillan formerly took an - active part in political life, having been elected a member of the General Assembly, and subsequently called by bis Excellency the Governor to a seat in the Legislative Council. He also sat in the Provincial Council, as a representative of Auckland city, and served as Provincial Secretary under Mr. Williamson during one of that gentleman’s terms of office as Superintendent, Of late years, however, Mr. Gllfillan’s state of health had caused him to withdraw from the active duties of citizenship. In private life he was highly esteemed and respected for his many personal virtues and social ualities.
