The goldfield of . Ballarat, in Victoria—which has been, laboring under depression for some time—is, we are glad to seej far from being worked out. The. alluvial, it is true, is not nearly so prodiictive as it was even in later days than those of the famous “ jeweller’s shop” on Golden Point ; but quartz-mining is extending and the yields improving. In the quarter ending July last 6,0580z5. 17dwts: and I2grs, were obtained ; in that ending September, 7,1730z5. 4dwts. 3grs. ; and in that closing with'December, 8,0780z5. 6dwts. 2grs. The latter was the yield of .26,981 tons of quartz, so that the Ballarat quartz-miners were content with the small average yield of sdwts. 2371grs. to the ton. What would they say to that at the Thames or on the Lyell ? Even that low average, however, was an improvement on those of the previous quarters, that in the three months ending with June having been only sdwts.-l-*s7grs.-
