The returns of gold from the Thames and Coromandel fields last year show that nearly 115,000 ounces were produced. This was a small return compared with that of the good times of the field, and yet it is by no means a small quantity in itself. This amount of gold is worth at least £300,000 in money, a sum which forms a large item in our exports from this province. The most marked feature of the case, however, is the large amount of gold obtained compared with the quantity of quartz crushed. There were nearly one ounce and a third obtained from every ton of quartz crushed on that goldfield. This is a large, and, what ia more, it is a persistent average. As the proportion of gold to stone is so large, it would si'em to indicate that thoso claims only are worked in which a very high average production of gold is obtained from the quartz. It cannot be denied that, if true, I these facts demand attention.
