The movements of Sir Donald McLean in the North are noticed as follows by the Thames Advertiser Sir D. McLean will go on to the Bay of Islands, where he will probably remain about ten days or a-fortnight, and then come down to the Thames. It is then his intention to make the necessary arrangements to have the native reserves laid off, and the goldfield opened. That is the programme at present. It has been stated that the King natives have made strong protests within the past few days in respect to the opening of Ohinemuri, and that it was possible Sir I). McLean might in consequence defer the opening until after his meeting with them in March next. Indeed, we believe there is some risk of this yet. The Native Minister has no doubt requests to make to the King party, and is anxious that they should not be able to say to him that he has just done an act which they consider injurious to them, and against their express protest. The Marquis, of Novmanby is expected to be present at the meeting, and probably an attempt will be made to come to a settlement with the King, so that he should abandon the position he has hitherto held, of holding a threat over the advancing colonisation of the North Island. We should be delighted to see Sir Donald McLeanmake such an arrangeroentjand can only hope that to do so will not necessitate any delay in the opening of the Upper Thames.”
