THE FOUNDATION OF THE COLONY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— The dinner to celebrate the thirty-fifth anniversary of the foundation of the colony will take place at the Odd Fellows* Hall on- Friday evening next. To those who have from the earliest days taken an active part in the foundation of an empire in the South, the Anniversary Day must be of the greatest interest: and to those who are nowreaping the benefit of the early struggles of the founders nf the colony > the day must be equally interesting; and to all, should he a day of rejoicing. The committee have wiselyriven the colonists generally—both early and late—an opportunity of meeting and exchanging those friendly flights of experience which it is to be expected will be the result of the dinner ; and it is to be hoped that not only will a large number of our citizens put in an appearance, but that our country settlers will muster strong. Many of our early and most energetic colonists are scattered about in various parts of the colony, and those who can strain a point to be present at this anniversary gathering should do so. The 22nd of January is the day of our nationality, ■».nd will remain so to the end of time, and-though those who bore the heat and burden of the early days are fast passing away from our midst, they leave behind them friends and relations who, with-those who are daily arriving, cannot but rejoice at the bright future of New Zealand. Let, then, there be a good •fathering at the dinner-table on Friday next.—T am. & c -» - Colonist.
