About six o'clock the barque Mary Moore, which had just arrived, was hanging off the Prince's Stage waiting to dock. A number of tugs were lying alongside the Prince’s pierhead at the same time, and the steam-tug Slasher cast off from the pier for the purpose of going to Anchor. - She had scarcely left the pier a moment when a terrible collision took place between her and the Mary*Moore, the Slasher lying right across the barque's bow. Immediately after the collision the, barque, .with the Slasher across her bow, went drifting down the river. Another tug. the Grapplcr, went to the . rescue with the'view of towing the Slasher to the bank, so that she might not sink in deep water, and whilst so towing her she suddenly sank stern first, her bow rising up perpendicularly and falling right on top of the Grapplcr a bow with her whole weight. So tremendous was the weight that the Grapplcr turned right over, bottom upwards, and both vessels immediately sank together, their crews being left struggling In the water. The scene that ensued was one of the most p&lnfal character. The tug-boata and the river craft were soon on the spot from all directions, and a number of the men were rescued ; several others, however, It la feared, were drowned, but up to this time'rellable particulars on this point cannot be obtained.— Home Htws.
