MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD.

The Board held its usual monthly meeting on Friday last, at the Court House, Palmerston. Members present —Messrs. Snelson, Dalrymple, Stewart, Farmer and Hughey. Correspondence.—Letter from Provincial Treasurer with draft enclosed for £219 3s. 6d. from the' General Government grant. Letter from F. H. Feilding, requesting the chairman to ’furnish mm with certain information, to be used in connection with a work about to be published by that gentleman as a directory of New Zealand. Petition from residents at Terrace-end, Palmerston, asking the Board to clear a road from main tramway Hue to their property. Resolved, that tenders be called for same immediately. Mr. Fanner was authorised to call for and accept tenders for certain works on Feilding and Sandon road. The Chairman was requested to write to the Government requesting them to lay off the line of road as recommended by the Board, to connect the townships of Feilding and Sandon. Resolved, to call for tenders for cutting the gravel bank on road line to Raukaua. A petition was read from settlers in Karere district, asking the Board to take steps to find a fresh outlet' for the Mongohoni stream. Resolved, that the chairman write to the General Government and ask them to undertake the works required, as they will benefit largely by the proposed alteration in savings effected in connection with the main road and tramway to Fox ton, which are frequently subjected to floods caused by the overflowing of the above-named stream. A deputation of settlers, consisting of Messrs. Linton, Kilgour, and McKenzie, waited upon • the Board to lay before them the necessity of doing something to improve the road leading to their property in Sandon district. It was resolved to call for tenders for cuttings and culverts where necessary, so as to make the road passable for dray,traffic. Mr. Stewart was authorised to call for tenders for the erection of four bridges on K -rere road line, and for formation of ten chains on road to Jackey-town, particulars to be laid before the Board at its next meeting. Tenders. —For clearing road to the public reserve, Palmerston, to lie over. For clearing road in the Scandinavian block, from Reiueraen and Thompson, declined, and fresh tenders invited. For clearing bush track, Carnarvon, from Harris and Co., at 10s. per chain, declined. The following accounts were passed and paid Balance duo to Feilding Company out of the £2OO voted by the Board for roadwork in their district.
