There were n» deaths, and two births on the voyage. "Alexandra, Monday. Tawhiao returned to Pekanui on Saturday from Kawhia. The caterpillars are playing sad havoc with the oat crop at Kopua. Christchurch, Monday. A girl named Isabella Thompson, aged thirteen, was found dead, with her throat cut, in a paddock at Lyttelton, at 6 a.m. on Saturday. The appearance of the body and clothes leads to the inference that the girl had been outraged. A man named Alfred Osborne, recently released from gaol, where he had been twelve menths for vagrancy, has been arrested on suspicion. A man named "W. K. Grant, chemist, employed by Gould and Co., was found dead in bed yesterday morning. It is supposed he died from an overdose of morphia, which he was in the habit of taking to induce sleep. The yacht Ripple capsized in a squall at Akaroa Harbor on Saturday. Sayle, owner and C. A. Nalder, solicitor, were drowned Two others swam ashore^ Tauranoa, Monday. The lakes are crowded with tourists, among whom is the Attorney-General of New South Wales. The geysers are in full play, Grahamstown, Monday. The news of the burning of the Cospatrick has caused a profound sensation and intense grief, many families here having relatives on board, coming out under the nominated immigration system. One: lately lost mother, brothers, and sisters, and has scarcely a single blood relation left.
