The partial returns of Customs’ revenue for 1874, received through the telegraph, are most assuring. Contrasted with 1873, they show a large advance. Auckland appears, relatively, to less advantage than any of "the other principal towns from which returns have come, while Wellington appears to the greatest. Thus : 1873. 1871. Increase. £ £ £ Wellington .. 88,560 .. 124,330 .. 35,770 Napier.. .. 33,101 .. 43,393 .. 10,297 Auckland .. 194,183 .. 221,130 .. 26,947 Dunedin .. 283,778 .. 357,109 .. 73.421 We shall, of course, be better able to form a just opinion of the relative position of the various settlements when we have complete returns before us; but we think we may fairly assume that from one end of New Zealand to the other, the same tale will be told by the statistics, namely, one of uninterrupted progress and prosperity.
