THE COLONIAL MUSEUM.

Huring the past two months the following additions have been made to the Colonial Museum: —A collection comprising 364 specimens of American birds and 80 specimens of rodents, by the Smithsonian Institute; a large bison’s head (a splendid specimen) by Professor Marsh, of Connecticut, TJ.S.; a further collection of valuoblo ooina, by A£r. S. Levy; a large head of humpback whale, by Mr. W. Gooch, of Kaikoura; 103 specimens of foreign birds’ eggs, by Mr. Witherby; some specimens of rare fish caught in the neighborhood of Cape Campbell, by Air. Robson; a model of a Chinese pagoda, by Captain Plumley; a leghorn straw hat, from material grown and prepared at the Bay of Islands from seed supplied by the Colonial Government, by SirH. McLean; a collection of fossils from Castle Point, by Mr. Innis ; a skull of a porpoise caught on the West Coast, by Hr. Adams,. H.M.S. Blanche ; a collection of insects of Tasmania, by Mrs, Batteraby ; a large Patagonian penguin, by Mr. J. Morton ; a valuable set of publications from the Royal Academy of Sciences of Stockholm ; a complete set of all the publications of the Geological Survey of India, forwarded in exchange for copies of the Transactions of the New Zealand Institute ; a collection of foreign birds, by Hr. Finsch, of Bremen; a large number of geological specimens obtained on the North Island by Hr. Hector, and a collection obtained by Air. A. AlcKay in the'Aliddle Island ; a skeleton of a new species of whale (Eubelaena Alarginata), by Mr. Charles Traill, of Stewart’s Island. About 100 other contributions of lesser interest than those noted have also been received.
