ANGLO-NEW ZEALAND NOTES.

A salvage reward of £3OO has been granted to the officer* and crew of her Majesty's ship Pearl by the owner of a vessel wrecked off Fiji. The Queen has been graciously pleased to appoint James Gillies, lisq., to be her Majesty's Vice-Consul in the Island of New Caledonia. Captain Wiseman, son of the late ItearAdmiral Sir William Wiseman, so long Commodore on the Australian Station, has been promoted from being in charge of the Coastguard on the Sussex coast to the command of the Lapwing. The last mail, via San Francisco, was delivered in London to date. Negotiations are in progress by which it ia hoped a reliable and permanent service will be secured. Some very good firms have been consulted upon the subject. The death of Captain Charles Clarke Richardson, of the 70th Foot, at Woodburn, Murree, in the Himalayas, aged 37, is announced. He served with his regiment in the New Zealand war during the years 1862 and 1803, and was aide-de-camp to Lieut-General Sir Trevor Chute, K.C.B. Mr. Bills, of Brighton, Sussex, is about forwarding to the Acclimatisation Society of Christchurch, Now Zealand, the following birds :—IOO brace of partridges, 100 pairs of golden plovers, 100 hedge sparrows, 100 thrushes, 48 pairs of goldfinches, 100 blackbirds, 40 pairs of redpoles, 20 pairs of blackcaps, and 50 pairs of brown linnets. Mr. Bills's consignment is sure to be welcomed. Mr. F. A. Cooper, formerly a member in the Legislature of New South Wales, and who is equally well known in Queensland and New Zealand, has been making a special study of our home and continental institutions. He proceeds by the outgoing mail steamer to Queensland to renew his profession as a barrister at Cooktown, where there ia no doubt the additional experiences gained in travel will prove of advantage to his constituents, and to the district generally. We regret to state that Dr. Eddy, the wellknown honorary secretary of the Royal Colonial Institute, died suddenly at Glasgow Railway Station on October 3, as he was proceeding with the Social Science excursion to Loch Lomond. He was to havo read a paper at the congress on India and tho colonies. This news will be received with much sorrow by many gentlemen in the colonies, who enjoyed the privilege of Dr. Eddy's acquaintance. He was a fervent worker in the interest of tho colonial empire. The European Mail has the following:— " The French war Bhip, La Viro, Captain Jaccraemart commanding, early this year aided materially in the rescue of a number of New Zealand Government emigrants, who wore Bhipwrecked off the coast of Otago. The Pro-

vincial Council of that province voted a testimonial of silver plate to Captain Jacquemart, and the Government of New Zealand directed its Agent-General, Mr. Featherston, on obtaining, the sanction of the French Minister of Marine to the presentation, to convey at the same time its thanks to the President of the Eepublio for the service rendered. Through the intervention of the British Embassy at Paris, the necessary sanction was obtained. Marshal McMahon,. attended by the Due Decazes (who had been addrossed by his Excellency the French Ambassador, the Comte de Jarnac, on the subject), and by Admiral Martaignac, Minister of Marine, has accordingly received Mr. Featherston. The Marshal expressed himself much gratified at such an expression of goodwill on the part of the New Zealand Government, and the Ministry of Marine took charge of the presentation to Captain Jacquemart, who is still on foreign, service.
