WELLINGTON JOCKEY CLUB.
A large and influential meeting of the stewards was held last night, at the Empire Hotel; George Hunter, Esq., M.H.E., in the chair. The principal business was the auditing of the accounts, and with few exceptions all were passed for payment. It was resolved to hold an autumn meeting on the Hutt Park Course (about ten days after the Canterbury Autumn Meeting), to consist of four races : Grand Stand Stakes, of £6O; distance, one mile and a half ; nomination, 1 sov.; acceptance, 2 sovs. Autumn Handicap, £75; two miles, second horse to receive 10 sovs. from the stakes; jnomination, 1 sov.; acceptance, 2 sovs. Plying Stakes, of £4O ; one mile and a quarter ; nomination, 1 sov.; acceptance, 1 sov. Hack Race, £10; post entry, 1 sov. We cannot but compliment the stewards on the energy they have shown, especially under rather unfavourable circumstances in respect to the weather they had to contend with during the last meeting. They appear determined tomake the Empire City’s meetings among the best, if not the principal, race meetings of New Zealand; and with the gentlemen at present connected with the club, they are likely to succeed in so doing. During the last two months over £4OO has been expended on improvements on the course alone, and it is contemplated to make still further improvements prior to the autumn meeting.
