[Pkess Telegkaph Agency.] Auckland, Wednesday. The young girl Cecilia Allen, charged with arson, is committed for trial. Mr. Prime is elected Mayor -without opposition. Thompson, Quick's manager, captured while levanting, was charged to-day with embezzling various sums amounting to £BO, and remanded. In the Supreme Court banco sitting, the Chief-Justice granted a rule nisi for writ of attachment against Meredith, clerk of the Eesident Magistrate's Court, at Patea, to show cause why he should not pay over £2O, lodged by Mr. Espayner, pending an appeal against the judgment of the magistrate, the appeal having subsequently been determined in his favor. The rule is returnable on the 20th of January. Miss May Howard has obtained intelligence of her two thousand pounds worth of jewelry, at first supposed to have been stolen on board the Hero. It was left in her bedroom in the hotel at Sydney, during the hurry of packing up, and was not discovered till after the steamer sailed. GnAHAJrsTOWN, Wednesday. A house was struck by lightning to-day. Napieh, Wednesday. At the Supreme Court sittings to-day, Judge Johnston congratulated the Giand Jury on the lightness of the calendar. William Blackman pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a mare, the property of Alexander Blair, of Poverty Bay, on the 20th of August last, and was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. William Little, charged with forging and uttering a cheque for £2O, purporting to be drawn by Neal and Close on the Bank of New Zealand, was convicted and sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. William Morton, alias Leonard, charged with forging and uttering a cheque for £l4 10s. 6d., purporting to bo drawn by J. Le Counter and B. Greenwood on the Union Bank,- was found guilty of uttering, and sentenced to three years. In the case of Pititi, a native, for horse-steal-ing, no bill was found, and the native was discharged.

The criminal business is finished. There is very little civil business. The Judge returns to Wellington on Friday. Chhistchurch, Wednesday. Continuous rain lias fallen since daybreak. It has caiised the postponement of all the Anniversary Day festivities. The programme for Christchurch included athletic sports, Odd Fellows and Good Templar pic-nics, Fire Brigade torchlight procession in the evening, and many smaller attractions. At noon to-day Frederick Hobbs was unanimously elected Mayor for the ensuing year. Donedin, Wednesday. Mr. Macandrew turns the first sod of the Ocean Beach and Peninsular Rail way on Tuesday next, so that it may bo completed to the Forbury by March for next race meeting. Westport, Wednesday. At the municipal election this day, Mr. Eobert Whytea, non-Councillor, was elected Mayor. Gketmouth, Wednesday. Mr. Gr. W. Moss was unanimously elected Mayor for the ensuing twelve months.
