MAYORALTY OF WELLINGTON.
The nomination of candidates for the first Mayoralty of the citizens of Wellington, under the Act of last session, took place yesterday. Early in the day the nomination paper of WILLIAM SESTON MOORHOUSE, solicitor, was handed in to the Town Clerk for the Returning Officer (Mr. Borlase). It was signed by Messrs. James Paul, John Magiuuity, James Smith, C. W. Schultz, John Plimmer, Jas. O'Shea, Henry Blundell, Thos. W. Young, and W. V. Jackson. At a later hour in the day the nomination paper of JOE DRANSPIELD, merchant, was put in. His nominators were Messrs. R. Eurrett, L. Levy, Edward Pearce, Walter Turnbull, W. W. Johnston, and Geo. Hall. Neither of the candidates were present in the Council Chamber at four o’clock. There appeared to be some doubt, also, as to whether it was the duty of the Returning Officer or the Town Cleric to deal with the nomination papers. It was apparent, however, that, there being more than one candidate for the seat, a poll was inevitable, and this, as the Act directs, will take place on the 17th instant. Mr. Moorhouse, who has already addressed the electors at some length, will do so again to-morrow evening, at the Princess Hotel, Thorndou, at 8 p.m. Mr. Dransfield, on the same evening, will meet the constituency in Te Aro, at some suitable place, to be announced to-morrow.
