THE RIMUTAKA TUNNEL.
TO TUB EDITOR. Sir,—l learn from tho papers that the tunnel is being formed very slowly. I heard that only one hundred and fifty yards were made, or rather less than seven chains; whilst the length exceeds forty chains, if my memory is correct, and twenty months is the remaining time of the contract, and a large bonus is offered for quick despatch. But a very serious matter I have also hoard, and hope may not be true, is that the contractors have been arrested by coming to trap rock, I have already, in your columns, urged the surveys and tho formation of tho road in this valley. Should the report about trap rock prove true, it will bo a further reason for proceeding with the railroad in this valley, so that the loads may pass between Feathorston and Pukaratahi by waggon in tho meantime. The rails and plant by return drays would bo brought over at ten or twenty shillings a ton, or at £35 or £7O per mile of railroad,— I have, &c., Samuel Revanb.
