THE NOTORIOUS HAYES ONCE MORE. (From the Sydney Empire, November 2.) H.M.S. Rosario, three guns, Captain Depuis, returned yesterday from a cruise to the South Sea Islands. The ship left Sydney on the 22nd March, reached Fiji on the 13th April, and cruised at the various islands of that group till the 22nd July, thence proceeded to Rotamah ; remained for a few days, then cruised through Marshall’s, Ellis’s, and Gilbert’s groups. The object of this visit was to get information regarding the notorious Captain Hayes. Afterwards went to Strong Island, where Hayes came on board, and piloted the Rosario into tho place. Infor.mation was being gathered at this place to make a specific charge against him. Hayes, however, was missing about (our days after the ship’s arrival. He is supposed to have left the island in an open boat. An enquiry was held, evidence being taken regarding iiis alleged misconduct. Hayes had lost his vessel, a brig called tho Leonora, during a south-west gale, in South Harbor, Strong Island. She sank in eleven fathoms of water, thirty-four hours .after striking. A portion of the brig’s crew, comprising two Chinese, one Malay, one German, and two Europeans, when at Providence Island, saw a white flag being waved on shore; landed, and found two white men, and eight South Sea Islanders. They had been left on the Island two years previously by Captain Hayes, to collect oil, and fgr some reason he never called for them. They were in a very distressed condition, there being only sixteen other natives, the natural inhabitants of the place, on the island. The men were rescued on the ICth September, and tho same evening the Rosario stood away for .Strong Island, arriving there on the 25th September, Landed the natives, with the chance of getting back to their own island. The ship has had fine winds since leaving Strong Island on the 20th October.
