ARRIVAL OF THE NEW GOVERNOR.
Sin,— I The newly appointed Governor, the Marquis of Normanby, may shortly be expected to arrive, and take up his residence amongst us. Is nothing to be done in the Empire city to give the representative of royalty a befitting welcome to this new land of ours ? If any demonstration is intended, it is time that arrangements were being made to carry it out. Whose duty it is to see to these matters, I am not aware; but this being the seat of Government, I think it would be well for the Ministry to take the initiative in the matter. A general holiday might be proclaimed, the Armed Constabulary and Volunteers might be brought into requisition ; and I have no doubt the several public bodies, such as the Odd Fellows, the Order of Foresters, the Kechabites, and other kindred societies, might be induced to turn out on the occasion, it the proper means were adopted for accomplishing the object. The various schools would also assist in the demonstration, as they have done on former occasions. Get the Mayor convene a public meeting, and a committee be appointed for carrying out this object, and I have no fear as to the ConoNisx.
