THE V.R.C. SPRING MEETING.

(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH,) ‘ [Press Telegraph Agency.] The following particulars of the late Spring Meeting of the Victoria Racing Club, on Flemington course, have been telegraphed from Dunedin THE MELBOURNE COP. The meeting began on Saturday, the 31st of October, but the race for. the Melbourne Cup took place on Thursday, the sth instant. Out of the twenty-six acceptors, nineteen went to the post. The race (as already reported) resulted as follows .•- - - Mr, A. Chirnside’s b.g. Haricot, 4yrs. (6st. 71bs.), including a penalty of 51bs. ... 1 Mr. J. AVilson’sbr.g. Protos, aged (Sst. 91bs.) 2 Mr. C. Dublin’s b.h. The Diver (late Dolphin), 4yrs. (6st. 101 b«.) ... ... 3 Horatio, Blue Peter, Papapa, Fugleman, Friendless, Thf<>a)ok, and Menindi*, were scratched on oost. Betting on the course just before the race was 100 to 40 against Goldsbrough, 4 to 1 against King of the Ring, 7 to 1 against Break o’ Day, 7 to 1 against The Diver, 12 to 1 against The Arrow, 12 to 1 against Fitz-yattendou, 10 to 1 against Lnrline. The Arrow made the running for Goldsbrough for about three-quarters of a mile, when Haricot went ahead, took a lead of about four lengths, was never caught, and won easily by about three lengths. Time : 3min. 37sec. It was a perfect “sell” for the public, Haricot not having been mentioned in the betting. Haricot, Break o’ Day, and Goldsbrough, each carried penalties of 51bs. extra, and Fitz-yat-tendon one of 31bs. extra ; Durline came in last but one. THE MABIBYIINONG PLATE, (Run on Saturday). Melbourne, by Panic— Myth 1 Dr. J. Bathe’s b. c. Stockbridge, by Stockham—Granny 2 Mr. G. Livingstone's b. c. Scan Mag, by Talk-o’-the-Hills—Norma 3 Menindie, Polidore, Blink Bonnie, Presto, The Hook, Torchlight, Neredah, and The Mute also ran. There was a splendid finishMelbourne made a tremendous rush, getting the inside running from Stockbridge, steadied himself for a moment, and then shot to the front, winning a grand race by a neck, and half that distance only separating the second and third horses.
