NIGHTMEN AND THE INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In the account published in the Evening Post of November 3rd, of the discussion which occurred at a meeting of the City Council on that day upon my application for compensation for the loss sustained through obedience of the Sanitary Inspector's orders, that functionary is reported to have said that Turner had not carried out his directions accurately, but had deposited the night-soil in improper places, both in the harbor and by the road-side. He had cautioned him several times. I cannot allow such observations to remain uncontradicted. I beg most emphatically to deny that either myself, or any person acting on my behalf, placed night-soil in any improper part of the harbor, or by the road-side. The choice of a spot for depositing the soil depended of course very much on the state of the tide ; but I have always been careful that it should be thrown as far out into the sea as the tide would permit. On the occasion of my being summoned by the Harbor Master for a breach of the Harbor Regulations, I had several witnesses in court who were ready to prove that in carrying out the orders of the Inspector, I always observed the rule which I have aboi'e laid down ; but, as the Magistrate held that their evidence was immaterial, and would not affect his decision, I abstained from calling them. I may add that I have every reason to believe that the information upon which the Harbor Master was led to take action in the Resident Magistrate's Court, was furnished by the Inspector himself, from whom I received the orders.—l am, &c, James Turner.
