SPORTING.
The latest turf gossip in the newspapers to hand, by the Alhambra, is encouraging to those amongst us who have been patriotic enough to back the New Zealand horses. The meeting will evidently be a most successful one, as not fewer than 319 horses have been entered for the various events —positively without including the Maribrynong Plate, the Victoria Derby, the Oaks, and the Mares’ Produce Stakes. In the Royal Park Stakes, Lurline will run (if her owner so mils) at weight for age, and it "will be a good thing her. Calumny does not appear to be fancied, “ Index,” in one of his latest reports, observing that in one of his recent exercises he did “ a slow twice round,” and “ appeared to go rather dozy.” Papapa had “ a twicer, going well.” The New Zealand horses, it appears, are always the earliest in the field, at dawn ; and Lurline has the advantage of the training of Cutts, one of the best known jockeys and trainers of the New South Wales turf. The latest betting was as follows : 100 to 23 agst. Goldshrough (off., 5 w.) 100 to 20 „ Break o' Day (off., 6 w.) 100 to 10 ~ Horatio (off.) 100 to 10 „ Lapidist (off.) 100 to 10 „ King of the King (off.) 100 to 8 „ Mountaineer (off.) 100 to 7 „ Haricot (tk. and off.) 100 to 6 „ Lurline (off.) 100 to 6 „ Protos (off.) 100 to 6 „ Fugleman (off.) 100 to 6 „ King Tom (off.) 100 to 6 „ The Arrow (off.) 100 to 5 „ Speculation (off.) 100 to 5 „ Fitz-Yatteudon (off.) 100 to 4 „ Gloom (off.) 100 to ' „ The Diver (off.) 100 to 4 „ Friendless (off.) Sir Hercules Kobinson was expected back from Fiji in time to attend the meeting..
