THE THEATRE ROYAL.
Last night the Stephenson-Burford companycommenced their season with the production of “East Lynne.” They were well received, considering the short notice given to the public and the ..unfavorable circumstances under which they appeared, there being a very good house, the attraction of the sacred concert at the Odd Fellows’ Hall notwithstanding. “East Lynne" is so well known that we need say nothing as to the nature of the story or the character of the play. It is emotional and sensational, attractive to many, and net so to others. Miss Stephenson played with great ability the double parts of Lady Isabel and Madame Vine, while the Archibald Carlyle of Mr. Burford was a very careful and excellent piece of acting. Pressure on our space compels us, however, to defer any further criticism of these accomplished performers, and of the other members of the company, until another occasion. The farce of “The Man in Possession" was very amusing, and occasioned, roars of laughter. This evening “The Octoroon” will be performed, and the company are reported to play it extremely well.
