CROWN LANDS DISPOSED OF IN 1873.
A return has been printed—having been presented to Parliament before the recess—of the quantity of land sold or otherwise disposed of in the several provinces of New Zealand during the year 1873. From it we find that in the province of Auckland 2667 acres of country, 460 of suburban, and 61 acres of town lands were sold ; the country lands at a trifle over 10s, per acre, the suburban at rather less than £6, and the town lauds at prices ranging from £lB 3s. Id. to £33 12s. 4d. The cash received was £4429 155., and £llOO in volunteer land scrip and New Zealand Company’s old laud claims. To immigrants 180 acres were granted ; and to natives, by grants under the Native Lands Act, 1865, &c., 224,501 acres ; fifty-seven acres were given in satisfaction of land scrip. In Taranaki only 795 acres were quitted, being granted under the Volunteer Lands Act, 1865. In Hawke’s Bay 114,036 acres of country, 126 of suburban, and four of town lands were sold, the price of the country land being under 10s, per acre, and the cash received £52,890. In exchange for land scrip 120 acres were given. In the province of Wellington 86,130 acres of country, 412 of suburban, and twenty of town lands were disposed of. The price of the country lands ranged from 7s. Bd. to 16s. 10d., and the sum received in cash was £50,382,. a sum of £3390 being represented by scrip of various kinds. Naval and military settlers received 1594 acres, 11 acres -were granted for public purposes, 149,403 acres to Europeans or natives under the Waste Lauds Act, 1858, Crown Grants Act, 1862, and Native Reserves Act. Four acres passed under “ old land claims.” In Nelson only 1795 acres of country lands were sold, at prices from Bs. to 20s. ; and 105 acres of suburban, at from 15s. to 205., and 14 acres of town lands, at from £4O to £45. The total sum brought by these lands was £1719 in cash, and £25 in scrip. Ten acres were set apart as reserves,, and one acre for another purpose, not stated. In Marlborough only 420 acres of country lauds were disposed of, at from 9s. to 18s. 6d., as compared with 764 acres of suburban, and 21 of town lands. The cash received was £IB4B, and no scrip was taken. 4837 acres were granted for public works executed, of the estimated value of £5159 ; and 306 acres were quitted as reserves. In Canterbury not less than 281,771 acres of country lands were sold, at from 40s. to 40s. Ifd. per acre. No suburban land was disposed of, and not more than 47 acres of town land ; the total cash receipts, being £566,930. Here, also, no scrip entered into the account. Reserves were made to the; extent of 1802 acres, and 690 acres were given in exchange for land taken by the Government, under the 42nd clause of theLand Regulations. In Westland 10,017 acres of country, 443 of suburban, and 48 of town lands were disposed of, the first-mentioned, bringing from 12s. 4fd. to 20s. Old. peracre, and the town lands from £42 Bs. to £B4lls. lid. per acre, the cash received being £11,619. For public works executed, 2043 acres were granted, representing one pound per acre. In Otago (not including Southland), 156,136 acres of country lands were sold at from 17s. lid. to 235., and 695 acres of town lands at up to £2B 75..

For public purposes, 100,016 acres were granted, 02 to Europeans or natives, and 2778 in satisfaction of land scrip. In Southland, 133,272 acres of country and 766 acres of town lands were disposed of, tho former at from 20s. to 225. per acre, and tho whole bringing £136,223. For public works executed 8000 acres were granted —2512 for reserves, and 189 acres otherwise. In all, 786,250 acres of country, 2313 suburban, and 1631 of town lauds were parted with for £930,758 11s. lOd. in cash, and £4793 6s. in scrip of various kinds ; 14,880 acres were given to contraotox-s for public works, valued at £15,202 ; 180 acres went to immigx-ants ; 1594 to naval and military settlers ; 104,660 acres were reserved for public purposes ; 362 granted to Europeans or natives under various Acts ; 373,905 acres were given to natives ; and 4634 acres “ in satisfaction of land scrip, or otherwise not specified.”
