THE ENGLISH OPERA.
MR. HALLAM S BENHWT. If proof were needed of Mr. Hallam's popularity with the public of this city, it was given convincingly last night, on the occasion of his benefit. " The Rose of Castile" was played to a house crowded in every part. The opera is known to be one of which the company are completely master, and last night they proved that the judgment of the public was correct. The opera was admirably performed. Mr. Hallam, on his entrance as the Muleteer, was received with most cordial and sympathetic applause, and he acknowledged the compliment with evident feeling, We have no intention of criticising the performance, but we may say that the encores were so numerous that the progress of the opera was seriously interrupted. It was a genuine success. To-night—the last of a successful season — " II Trovatore " will be performed.
