SYNOD OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
FitiDAY, October 2. Present—The President ; Clergy : Archdeacon. Stock, Revs. James McWilliam, T. Fancourt, A. Towgood,"H. W. St. Hill, E. H. Granger. Laity : "Messrs. W. H. Quick, H. Sewell, Gr. Allen, R. Hunter, Dr. Kemp, F. Pearce, 0. P. Powles, J. (1. Allan. The proceedings were opened with prayer. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ' Mr. Powles read the balance-sheet of the Diocesan Fund and the list of Hubscribers, which wore ordered to be printed, ou the motion of Mr. Peakce, seconded by, the Rev. B. W. Hahvey. The Rev. B. W. Haiwey read the report of the Committee on Parochial Bcturas, and gave notice that he would move its adoption. Mr. Sewell read the report of .the Registration Committee, and gave notice that on the next sitting day he would bring- in a Bill to carry its recommendations into effect.' The debate on the resolutions of Mr. Sewell for tho consolidation of trusts was resumed, and tho resolutions were carried. Archdeacon Stock moved, and the Rev. B. W. Hakvey seconded, —" That the Bishop be recpaested to consider tho desirability of admitting into deacon's orders suitable men willing to devote some portions, of their timo to the work of the ministry, without requiring them to give up the secular occupations by which they gain their livelihood."
The debate was adjourned until Monday evening at 7.30. It was moved by the Rev. B. W, Harvey, and seconded by Archdeacon Stock, —" That the scheme of the Pension Board of the Diocese of Christchurch be adopted, as far as possible, by this Diocese." Carried. The Rev. B. W. Harvey moved, and the Rev. A. Towgood seconded,—" That the Standing Committee be requested to take into consideration the best means of giving effect to the resolution of the General Synod, concerning the advisability of circulating good books, secular and religious, in the Diocese." Carried. Mr. Powles moved, and Dr. Kemp seconded, —" That the Bill to provide for the appointment of assistant curates to parishes be read a second time." The Bill was withdrawn by the leave of the Synod. ■- Notice of motion was given by the Rev. B. W. Harvey,—"That the minimum amount to be fixed by the Diocesan scale for the salary of a curate be £200." The Synod then adjourned until Monday evening, at 7.30.
