SYNOD OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
Thursday, October 1. Present —The’ President ; Clergy ; Archdeacon Stock, Rev. James McWilliam, Rev. A. Towgood, Rev. T. Fancourt, Rev. B. W. Harvey, Rev. W. Ballachey, Rev. H. W. St. Hill, Rev. E. H. Granger ; Laity ; Messrs. W. H. Quick, H. Sewell, G. Allan, R. Hunter, Dr. Kemp, C. P. Powles, T. Buchanan, and E. Pearce. The proceedings opened with prayer. The minutes of the previous day’s meeting were read and confirmed. Archdeacon Stock moved, seconded by Mr. Quick, —“ That the report of the Standing Committee be adopted and printed.” Carried. Mr. Sewell moved, and Mr. Quick seconded, —“ That the resolutions attached to the report of the Committee on Trusts, empowering tho Standing Committee to consolidate the scattered trust boards throughout tho Diocese into'one or more central boards be adopted. Tho discussion was adjourned. A motion on the addition to the Diocese of the district south of Mount Egmont and to the north of the Diocese was withdrawn, as substantially the same as another passed on a former day. On the motion of the Rev. W. BallachEy, the Printing Committee of the Synod was appointed. Moved by Mr. Buchanan, seconded by Archdeacon Stock,—" That the Standing Committee be instructed to ask the trustees of tho Fire Insurance branch of the Pension Fund to do as the General Synod had directed.” Carried. The motion of Mr. Buchanan to carry onward the above resolution was withdrawn by the leave of the Synod. Moved by Dr. Kemp, seconded by the Rev. H. W. St. Hill, —“ That there be printed in the annual report of the Synod the names of lay readers in the Diocese, the district in which they work, and the dates of their appointment.” Carried. The motion of Dr. Kemp, requiring that certain forma be prepared, was postponed until the report ot the committee on parochial affairs was brought up. Mr. Powles moved. Dr. Kemp seconded, — “For.leave to bring in a Bill to make provision for the appointment of assistant curates to parishes.” Carried.
■The Ber. H. W. St. Hill, for Mr. Sewell, ealletl the attention of the Synod to Statute Ko. V., directed by the General Synod to be remitted to the Diocesan Synod for thenconsideration. Moved by Alderman Stock, seconded by Mr Quick, —“That the thanks of the Synod be given to Mr. Barraud, the late Diocesan treasurer.” Carried. Moved by Alderman Stock, seconded by Mr. Quick, “That Mr. Bowles be elected Diocesan treasurer.” Carried. The Synod then adjourned to half-past seven p.m. next day.
