TIIEY would seem to be very fond of litigation in Victoria, or there is unusual occasion in the business of people there for resorting to the • Courts for justice. The civil business done in the Police and County Courts is immense, and we see that in the months of July and August not fewer than 723 writs of summons were issued in the Prothonotary's for a total of £179,678 16s. BJd.; 312 judgments by default were signed by the Prothonotary to recover £46,810 3s. Bd., with £1302 13s. 7d. of attorney's costs to be added; executions were issued to enforce payment of £11,472 17s lid.; whilst there were five capiases to hold to bail for £758 2s. There were forty-two fraud summons issued, representing sums amounting to £1197 16s. 3d.; and three wan ants' of commitment signed for non-payment of £72 17s. 2d.
It is not yet known in Tasmania when His Excellency Governor Weld will arrive in Hobart Town, but information on the subject was expected by the Golconda's mail from the Secretary of State. Mr. Duoane had asked Lord Carnarvon to permit him to retire, so that ho might be able to leave by the mail steamer, or the steamer Northumberland, from Melbourne, early in December, and his request has been assented to.
