CHRISTCHURCH. The Times of Saturday reports:—The principal change in the grain market, during the week, has been in respect to oats, which, owing to the large local demand—farmers having actually been compelled to come into town to buy horsefeed —have run up to ss. per bushel. The town price of wheat Is 4s. od., but millers’ stocks are low, and those farmers who hold are standing out for ss, Owing to the weather prevalent during the past week, no shipments were made coastwise. The following are Christchurch quotations ; —Wheat, 4s. 9d.; oats, 55.; barley, nominal, 4s. Gd. to 4s. 9d,; rye grass seed, 4s. 6d.; flour, £XI 10s.; sacks, £ls; 100’s £l2 10s.; 50’s, 10s. extra, f.0.b.; bran, £5 155.; pollard, £5 155.: fine sharps, £0 155., 10s. extra f.o.b. In Lyttelton. Butter is still wanted at 12Jd. to 13£d., with little offering ; cheese of good quality is in demand at 7d.; bacon and hams remain at In cloth; hams only, Is.; bacon only, BJd., f.o.b. in Lyttelton. Potatoes are in very short supply at £9 to £lO, delivered at the Christchurch Railway Station. MELBOURNE. In one of the latest daily reports of the markets in Melbourne it is remarked :—“Feeding grains are improving, and seem likely to take a start. At auction ss. 2d. was bid for a parcel of heavy New Zealand, and privately ss. 3d. was offered and declined. We understand some considerable sales have been effected privately, and the market is much firmer. Hops have been mentioned for business, and a parcel of 1874 Tasmanian has found a buyer. Malt is slightly improved In request.” THE NEW VICTORIAN TARIFF. The following are the substitutions made by Mr. Service in the original tariff schedule he submitted to the -Legislature:—Boots and shoes (present English sizes to be the standard) —Men’s, No. (land upwards, per dozen pairs; youths’. Nos, 2-5. 15s. do.; boys’, 25*. Nos, 7-1, Ila. do,; women’s No. 3 and upwards, 15s. do,: girls’, Nos. 11-2, 11s. do.; do. Nos. 7-10, 7s. do.; children’s, Nos. 0-0, 3s. do.; “lasting” and “stuff” boots and slippers of all descriptions, 10s. do.; goloshes of all kinds, 4s. do. In the article of oils, a reduction b ns been made of 6d. per dozen in quarts and pints, and 3d. per dozen In half-pints and smaller sizes; whilst in materials for exploding purposes, guncotton has been reduced from Od to sd. per lb., lithofracteur and dynamite being charged 4d. instead of Gd. per lb., and cartridges ss. Cd. per 1000. Some additions have been made to the 10 per cent, duties, consisting of tinned ware and ironware, stamped; also brass types, typeholders, ornamental rolls and line filets, for bookbinders; sofa, chair, and other furniture springs.
