EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the Board was held at the Education Office yesterday, at 11 o’clock. Present: Messrs. Brandon (chairman), Hutchison, Pharazyn, and Toomath. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. provincial vote. A letter from the Superintendent was read referring to a resolution passed by the Boaid at. their meeting of the 7th insfc., .to„,the effect that application should be made to .the Provincial Government; for a sum of £3228 10s! bn. the building account. The letten also called attention to the assistance given by the Provincial Government at various times, ’ and to the fact that more than half' the grant voted last session has been paid, though six months of the financial year had not yet passed. And further, that the sum of- £6157, a moiety of which the Board applied for, was voted by the Provincial Council for “ school-houses, &0.," and may be expended by the Government with the concurrence, or by the recommendation o that body; but not necessarily handed over to the Board in lump sums for that body to expend as they think proper. The Government could only cany out the votes of the Council as far as the revenue allows. The letter also asked for a statement showing how the Board recommended the vote for “school-houses, &c.,” should be expended; and promising that as soon as funds are available, the works shall he proceeded with, provided the suggestions are approved of by the Government. The Secretary was instructed to write, and refer His Honor the Superintendent to a letter of 18th March, in which a statement was furnished. He was also instructed to make out a fresh detailed statement to date. periodical statements. A letter from the Superintendent was read,. forwarding a memo, from the Provincial Auditor, in which it was suggested that the Education Board should be required to furnish accounts periodically, showing how moneys voted by the Provincial Legislature for educational purposes have been expended. The letter concluded by asking compliance with. the suggestion. It was decided that no detailed accounts could be provided. The accounts ■were always audited as required by the Act, and they were open to inspection by the auditor. CORPORATION ACCOUNTS. The Inspector of Nuisances attended, and explained relative to the account which had been objected to at the last meeting for Corporation night work, that it had been reduced. The account, as amended, was then passed, SCHOOL INSPECTION. An. application was read from Mr. 'Wray,., chairman of the Patea School Board, to permit Mr. Lee, the Inspector, to inspect two schools in that district. The Board decided to grant the request for this occasion, bn the understanding that the Patea Board should make arrangements about expenses incurred. COLLECTION. It was resolved that Mr. Levy, the collector,, should be allowed five per cent, commission on the collection of the education rates. HALF TIME SCHOOLS. A resolution passed at a meeting held at Bonny Glen relative to this subject was read. It complained that the children were not making satisfactory progress under the halftime system. The Board expressed their regret at being unable to move in the matter at present, but would be willing to join in any plans whereby an improvement might be effected. Letters on the same subject were read from Korokora and Horokiwi asking the Board to reduce the fees to half, as the schools were, only half time.' Consideration of the question was postponed. PAEAWANOI SCHOOL. A letter was read applying for additional closet accommodation, and that a well might be sunk for the use of the school. The Secretary was instructed to ascertain the probable cost. ; inspector’s report. ■ The report of the Inspector was tabled, hut ■ its discussion and consideration was postponed until next meeting. The Board then adjourned.
