CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held in the Provincial Puddings yesterday afternoon. Present : The Mayor, Councillors Mills, Moss, Burrett, Dransneld, George, Raiuie, Greenfield, and MoKirdy. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Outward correspondence was then read and approved. • PETITION. A petition was presented from a number of residents and business people on Lambtou Qnav, relative to the state of the street crossings. Referred to the members of tbe ward and the Surveyor. COBKESFONDEXCE, From J. C. Crawford forwarding papers, re Brown's patent system of utilisation of town sewerage. Referred to the Sanitary Committee. From St. George relative to tire state of Wright Street. Referred to the Surveyor to report on. From R, M. Mosley, applying for au order to advertise the Corporation debentures in his Monthly Prices Current Circular. Granted. From His Honor tbe Superintendent informing the Council that at a meeting of the Provincial Executive it had been decided relative to the survey of the City not to undertake the levelling operations necessary for drainage purposes ; but the Executive were cpiite prepared to carry out the survey of the City as per memorandum of the Chief Surveyor forwarded to Council on 20th March last. (The memorandum has already been published.) Councillor Mills said it seemed to him that the Government had resolved to do nothing on favorable, terms to the Council; so the sooner that body set about the work themselves the better. Councillor Deanspielb moved in connection with this matter, that an advertisement which he placed upon the table should bo published. Councillor Mills seconded the motion. Councillor Geouce moved as an amendment that the advertisement, as written, be referred for revision. to the Surveyor, Councillors Dransfield, Mills, and the mover. Carried. From the General Post-office authorities, complaining of the inconvenience and annoyance caused to the public from the cabstand in front of the Post-office, and the assembly of drivers continually congregated on the Postoffice verandah, and asking that the stand may bo abolished. A discussion arose as to the powers of the City Council to effect au alteration in the locality of the stand, and it was ultimately resolved that the point be referred to the City Solicitor for his opinion. From the Secretary of the Wellington Land and Building Investment Society, asking for the formation of a street through a five-acre lease which the company had purchased find " are building upon. Referred to the Surveyor-, to report upon the probable cost to the next meeting. From F. H. Brady, complaining that his name had been omitted from the burgess list. The Town Cleric was instructed to reply that tho roll could not lie altered. From the proprietors of hackney carriages in the City relative to the licenses for hackney and Borough stage carriages. Some little discussion took place upon this matter, and it was then allowed to stand over. From the residents of May Street, asking that water may h* laid on to their premises. Refereed to the Surveyor. rua-miTH. The Waterworks Committee’s report was read and adopted. The report of the Sanitary Committee was read. Its principal clause recommended that V*- i| cense8 ‘ be granted to the old uightmen, but that the Inspector make arrangements with any of them whom he may think fit to work for the Council ; that the depot for night soil for the future ho Magazine Point, and the Inspector be authorised to make a small jetty as suggested by him and td get tho work put in order. Councillor Raixie moved the adoption of tho report. Councillor George moved as an amendment, —“That the report be not adopted.” He spoke of the very objectionable and disgT-aoe-ful state of the City sewerage. The report was, after some ..discussion, adopted. The Town Clerk’s report was also read and adopted. The report of the Inspector,of Nuisances was read and adopted. ACCOUNTS. ' ' A number of general and wages accounts were presented and passed. STREET WATERING. The SuitVEVOB stated that numerous cornplaintg were made as to the inconvenience and annoyance arising from the use of the hose for watering the streets. He had gone round with the men engaged, and found that they were altogether unable to guide the stream. Ho thought that the Council would have to resort to the use of water-carts, COMMITTEES. It was resolved that Councillor George’s name be added to all Committees on v/bich Councillor Krull’s stood; and also to the Sanitary Committee. The Council then adjourned.
