CRICKET.

By the latest neAvs to hand from Melbourne there seems a probability of a Melbourne team visiting New Zealand during the coming season. It is to be sincerely, hoped that such may he the case, as, besides being a pleasant excitement, it should do much towards improving and enlivening cricket in this Colony. It is not at all probable that the Best team procurable in Victoria Avill be available for the contemplated trip, although there is little doubt that any cricketer in Victoria would only too gladly seize the opportunity of visiting New Zealand on such au enjoyable business if his occupation would admit of an absence extending over the time Avhich the excursion, as it may be termed, Avonld necessarily involve. However, a very good team can undoubtedly be got together, and it is to be hoped that the New Zealanders, Avhilst according the visitors : a hearty and hospitable welcome in the AvellknoAm good-hearted style of this Colony, Avill prepare, by constant and energetic practice, to afford them a very warm reception fn a cricketing sense. Whilst on the subject of cricket, it is very pleasing to notice that steps are uoav being taken tOAvards the temporary improvement of the Wellington ground, and that men are already at work upon it. This shows a determination to commence the season properly, and when once a good beginning is made, it is very easy. and particularly pleasant to carry on Avith energy and spirit so fine and. healthy an exercise. With the number of active young men in the place, Avho should only too gladly take advantage of the opportunity offered for athletic exercise of any description, the various clubs should he well represented. In fact there is no reason why another should not he started ; there is ample room for it, and there is nothing like competition. A very fair club should be available from the different printing offices in the tOAvn, and the Avarehousemen should also he able to form one. Perhaps the suggestion may be Avorthy of consideration.
