MANAWATU HIGHWAY BOARD.
A meeting of the above Board, was held at Palmerston Court House, on Friday, the 4th inst. The members present were :—Messrs. Snelsbn (chairman), Dalryraple, Stewart, Farmer, and Hughey. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, it was resolved to transfer the Board account from the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, to the Bank of Australasia, in Foxton. The following correspondence was read :—A letter from the Crown Lands Office, Wellington, was received in answer to one sent by the Secretary, asking for a return of land sold in this district during the last year ending 30th June. As the necessary return was not sent, the Secretary was instructed to make another application. Letter from Mr. C. Bell, agent for Brogden and Sons, asking if the Board would dispose of the timber on the bush land belonging to the Palmerston reserve, and if so, at what price. Resolved, that the matter lie over at present, until the Board have had an opportunity of ascertaining the probable quantity of timber referred to; and, likewise, of seeing what quantity may be required for necessary bridges and culverts in the neighborhood. Letter from Mr. Claridge, agent for Brogden and Sons, stating that that firm contemplated erecting a saw-mill on Native land, adjoining the above-named reserve, and asking permission to lay and use a tramway on the line of road leading from the mill to Palmerston tramway. Resolved, that permission be granted conditionally, particulars to be arranged by the Inspector of Works, on behalf of the Board. Applications were received from Messrs. Tomkins and Hale, Sandon, and Mr. Monrad, Karere, for permission to erect gates across highways in their districts. Resolved, that the matter lie over until the next meeting of the Board. The Secretary was instructed to prepare a list of all rate-defaulters in the Manawatu District, and forward the same to the New Zealand Times for publication. Letter from Messrs. Waldegrave and Claridge, asking the Board to clear a road line leading to certain property lately purchased by them, situated behind the Scandinavian Settlement, below Palmerston. Resolved, that the application will receive due attention from the Board, when there is sufficient fluids at its disposal. Accounts presented:—From Mr. T. XT. Cook, Foxton—ls., for fee as presiding officer at the- nomination and election of Warden Hughey. Resolved—that Mr. Cook be requested to forward his claim to the Superintendent at Wellington, it being the opinion of the Board, that as presiding officer at an election, he was acting for the Provincial Government at the time. Mr. Pearse, Carnarvon—£2l, erection of three culverts, paid ; Mr. Hunt, Carnarvon—£3B 75., felling and clearing road line, do.; Mr. D. Walden, Foxton—£4, repairs to road, do.; Mr. Snelson —£3 12s. IOcL, postage and stationery, do.; Mr. Wm. McDonall, Palmerston—£l4 55., forming and metalling footpath. The Inspector of. Works was instructed to inform the last-named contractor that before he could receive the amount claimed he must finish the work properly. Tenders were received for continuation of Foxton line, Sandon district, being 140 chains more or less, from T, Sanson —£230, accepted ; Drummond—£93o, declined ; Prisk and Co., declined. Tender for ploughing 100 chains on road line, Sandon, from T. Sanson—£l7, accepted. The Board adjourned until Friday, the 2nd October next, at one o’clock p.m.
