AUCKLAND. The Southern Crosi, of the 4th Inst., reports :—ln general business wc have little change to record. Transactions in bottled ales continue of a very limited character. Probably with the advance of the summer season - wo shall have occasion to chronicle a better inquiry, but the stocks on hand are quite equal to all prospective requirements, and a decrease in the imports would be prudent; 12a. 6d. to 13s. are the outside quotations for best brands. Stout about the same figure. Stocks of breadstnffs are still heavy, more particularly of Southern Dour, which rules from £l3 to £ll per ton. Millers', quotations of Auckland Hour are £l6 per ton f»r superior, and £ll for household, rates which have ruled with remarkable evenness for more than eighteen months past. Adelaide Hour of country brand la ottering.at £l7. -Maizo. is fully stocked, and commands 6s. per bushel. The C'allfornian oats recently imported do not seem to meet with much favor, and are quoted at is. Southern oats, feed, S 3, to ss. 3d. ; barley, 4s. Od. to ss. Candles are ully stocked; sales of sperm have been made at 103 d. Coals have become overstocked, owing to the, sudden stoppage in the demand calculated on for the supply Of mail steamers. Wo regret our inability to report more favorably of flax (phormlum). The lot 3 coming forward are mostly absorbed at prices according to the
quality to meet local and Australian requirements. Uum (kauri) comes forward in fair supply, and is steadily bought up for export at from £27 to £3O. Groceries bavo been imported sparingly and wo are now only moderately stocked. Shipments to arrive, however, will meet most of the requirements of the market. Sugars:—The competition between the Australian refineries continues with satisfaction to the consumer, though perhaps less so to the producers. Messrs. Joshua, Brothers, of Melbourne, have now obtained a Arm footing in the market, and will no doubt continue to enjoy a fair share of the trade.
