THE NEW VICTORIAN TARIFF.
The following are the changes proposed by the Treasurer, and submitted to the Parliament of Victoria on the 27 th ultimo. They were to take effect on the Ist of January, 1875 The following is a retm-n of the goods on which it is proposed to remit duty : —Present rate of duty : Dutch metal and tinfoil, glass (plate and window), gold and silver leaf, 10 per cent. ; brasswaro, cxxps, copperware, cutlery, fishing materials, saddlers’ ironmongery, tools and utensils, hardware and ironmongery, holloware (manufactures of metals not otherwise enumerated), 10 per cent. ; stx-aw hats and straw boxmets ' (untrimmed), hats, caps, and bonnets, 20 per cent. ; matting, except cocoanut,.lo per cent. ; paper-hangings, 10 per cent..; seeds, 10 per cent. ; tanks (iron), containing merclxandise, 20 per cent. ; “materials, &c., as under, 10 per cent. To be reduced from 20 per cent, to 10 per cent. : Earthenware (not being brownware), 20 per cent. “ Material,” &e., viz. :—ln.the piece : Gossamer, pin spot book muslins, curtain net, harness muslin, crape puffing, damask cloths, cotton pocket handkerchiefs, bhxe bundle handkerchiefs, cotton madders, Manchester corahs, wincey skirtings, dimity, yack lace, gimp, cotton fringe., Not made up : Loom dice cloths, crxxmbclotbs, towels, dusters, counterpanes, toilet covers, quilts, Victoria table covers, printed cloth covex-s, embossed covers, embroidex-y covers, frock bodies and infants’ sewn muslin bodies. The following shows goods subject to ad valorem duties, on which it is proposed to change the duties to fixed rates ;
The following is a list of goods proposed to be added to. the list of manufactures of metals liable to duty at 20 per cent., but now paying 10 per cent. :—Crucibles (black lead), furnace doors and frames, gas stoves, latches and locks (wrought iron), gridirons, meat hooks, soldering irons, furnace pans (galvanised), hinges (T), cork drawers (wire and steel), garden reels, beams and scales, steelyards, bench screws, wire netting, hammers (napping, quartz, and spalling). Wines.—Wine is increased from 3s. to 45., and sparkling wine from 3s. to 6s.
