EXPENSES OF, IMMIGRANTS.
TO THE EDITOR.. g IK) —During the last season or two a great number, of immigrants have been brought into this who have been carried about where ' most required, and fed at the public expense till suitable employment could be found for them. ' This is all very good, but could they hot have been fed and carried about at one-half the expense charged? No tenders have ever been invited ; goods are probably supplied at exorbitant prices—who can tell > And if this system applies to all New Zealand, many thousands of borrowed money probably have been wasted. No public servant should have it in his power to pay what prices may be charged without first having called for tenders for the same, as in all other cases up to the present time it is something like, having, supplied forty regiments with provisions in this way. It will be worth while and interesting to look into these matters carefully.— Yours, &c, .>.- - - ■• ■'"■:''.' Wairarapa, Aug. 3. *
