THE EMPLOYMENT OF FEMALES ACT.
The Employment of Females Act 1873 Amendment Act, as passed by the Legislative Council, and agreed to by the House of Repx*esentatives, consists of four clauses. To the third clause an addition was made on the motion of Mr. Bradshaw, and the fourth clause is a new one, also moved by Mr. Bradshaw to meet the Westland cases. The following is the Amendment Act as it now stands : 1. The short title of this Act shall be The Employment of Females Act 1873 Amendment Act, 1874. 2. This Act shall be read with, and as part of The Employment of Females Act, 1873, hereinafter called the said Act. 3. The third section of the said Act shall be and the same is hereby repealed, and the following provision shall be substituted in lieu thereof, that is to say, No person shall employ any female at any time between the hours of six in the afternoon and eight in the morning, or for more than eight hours in any one day. Every person employing any female in any workroom shall 'from time to time cause a statement in writing, signed by him, specifying the hours during which females in his employ are employed in their employment, to he filed in the Resident Magistrate's Court in the city, town, or place where such workroom is situated, and true copies of such statement shall be posted up in some conspicuous place in every such workroom, and a copy of such statement shall be forwarded to the officer of police in charge of the district where such workroom is situated. 4. The second section of the said Act shall be and the same is hereby repealed, and the following provision shall be substituted in lieu thereof, that is to say —In the construction of this Act and the said Act the following terms shall, if not inconsistent with the context or subject matter, have the meanings hereby respectively assigned to them ; that is to say, “employ” shall apply to any manual labor exercised by way of trade, or for purposes of gain in or incidental to the altering, repairingT ornamenting, finishing, or otherwise adapting by way of trade, or for purposes of or for sale, any article ; “ female ” means any woman or female child so employed ; “workroom” includes any place in which females are so employed.
