COLONIAL INDUSTRIES.

The following report of the Select Committee of the House of Representatives on Colonial Industries has been brought up by the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. W. A. Murray : Report No. 1. I am directed by the Committee to report that, having taken evidence upon the subjects of coal and iron, in connection with the Para Para Coal and Iron Company, Collingwood district, the Committee unanimously passed the following resolution : —“ That the Government be urged to take into consideration the alternative proposals hereto annexed, with the view to the adoption of one of them, upon such terms as the Government think fit, in order to insure the establishment of the manufacture of iron in the Collingwood district; and that, failing such arrangements, the Government should earnestly consider the propriety of establishing iron works on behalf of the Colony.” Proposals op Mr. Anderson.—lst. That the Government should make the tramway from the mine to the site of the works, a distance of three or four miles, which would be also available for the shipment of coal from this and other mines. 2nd. That the General Government advance the sum of £SOOO, to enable the Company to take up the unsubscribed shares; the Company to give security to the approval of the Government. 3rd. That the Government guarantee interest upon capital paid-up and expended at the rate of 5 per cent, for ten years upon an amount not exceeding £-10,000; the Company to repay any such payments by the Government by refunds out of the bonus or out of future profits of the Company; the term for claiming the bonus to be extended to 30th June, 1876. Report No. 2. Paper.—That in the event of the bonus offered for the manufacture of paper not being claimed, the sum of £1,500 should be offered for the production of the first 50 tons of grey or wrapping paper, and the sum of £I,OOO be offered for the production of the first 50 tons of printing paper, and that the bonus be claimable any time before the 30th June, 1876—the conditions being the same as those previously recommended. Bottles.—That the Government should procure evidence as to the prospect of satisfactorily establishing the manufacture of black glass bottles ; and that, in their discretion, bonuses may be offered of not exceeding £6OO each for the establishing of such manufacture in four different localities. Pottery.—That a bonus be offered for the manufacture of pottery ware, in works permanently established in the Colony, of £3OO for the first £2OOO worth of pottery ware suitable for household purposes, the quality to be approved and conditions fixed by the Government; bonus to be available until the 30th June, 1876. Linseed Oil.—That a bonus of £SOO be offered for the production by machinery, permanently established in the Colony, of 10,000 gallons of linseed oil, of good marketable quality, and from linseed grown in the Colony. Conditions to be fixed by the Government, and bonus to be available until the SOtli of June, V 1576. Coal.—That, being impressed with a conviction of the paramount importance of obtaining a cheap and abundant supply of coal for the development of manufactures and commerce in the Colony, your Committee desires urgently to press the necessity of more vigorously, proceeding with works to render our coal fields available.
