Mr. Major, C.E., of Melbourne, chief engineer for Western Australia, has let a contract for the construction of about thirty-three miles of the Geraldton and Northampton Railway, in the Champion Bay district of that Colony. The contractor in Mr. James Palmer, of Melbourne, and the amount of the contract about £50,000. Plant and material for the prosecution of the work are being collected in Melbourne. The proposed railway is to start from Champion Bay and proceed northwards through the rich mineral district that has already been discovered and proved in that direction, and it is anticipated that an extension of sixty miles will be undertaken at some future time, through the lead and copper country that lies beyond Northampton. The line, which is to be constructed on the 3ft. 6iu. gauge, will cost about £2500 per mile, including rolling stock.
