THE CHORAL SOCIETY.
TO THE EDITOR Sin, —I am glad to see by advertisement that a general meeting of those interested in musical matters, and members of the Choral Society, is called, to breathe, if possible, life into the dry bones. I should be glad to see the society flourish, and take the liberty of thinking such result would be expedited by observing the following rules : —lst. All performing members to go through some (however slight) examination by the conductor before being admitted to practice. 2nd. Practice to commence punctually at a stated hour. Members would come at the appointed time if they knew that rule would be strictly carried out. 3rd. All subscriptions to be collected when due from performers, and subscribers, without respect of persons; and no performer or subscriber in arrear to be allowed to attend a concert, until payment is made to the Treasurer. 4th. Music to be ready for next concert while one piece is ,jn practice ; indeed, I would go so far ais to propose that a whole season's programme be prepared and published at commencement of each season. If the programme be attractive, subscriptions will increase, and more performers join. sth. Try to please as well as instruct the public. Have the first part of each concert classical music, second part light and varied. 6th. Keep up the social standing of the society, to induce all classes of performers to join. For instance, I think it a mistake to link the name of the Choral Society with itinerant professional performers in the way of "assisting" them except in peculiar cases. Some young ladies are, I am led to understand, a. little shy of it on that account. 7th, and last. |Let the committee study the convenience of each class of performers separately, giving most weight to the interests of the greatest number. I allude particularly to the chorus ; and do not invite members of chorus to attend when there is little or nothing for them to sing.—l am, &c, A Member. Wellington, July 14.
