ARRIVAL OF THE TARARUA. EUROPEAN NEWS TO JUNE 20. LOSS OF A TURKISH SHIP AND 320 LIVES. [Press Telegraph Agency.] Gkey.moutii, Tuesday, 9.10 p.m. The s.s. Tararua arrived off Hokitika at five o’clock this morning. She was not tendered there, owing to no steamer being available, and came on here, where she was tendered at 11 a.m., but the steamer could not return to port until 9 p.m. The Tararua left Hobson’s Bay at 10.30 a.m. on the 21th, and experienced strong head winds during the voyage. She brings eighteen saloon and forty-nine steerage passengers, 186 tons cargo, and twenty-two horses for all ports. London, June 20. Owing to the election for North Durham having been declared void on petition, a fresh election was held, resulting in the return of Sir. Pahnex', Liberal, and Mr. Elliott, Conservative, instead of Messrs. Lothian Bell and O. M. Palmer, both Liberals. The deaths of J. C. M. Bellew and of Jules Gabriel Janin, French critic and author, are announced. June 22. The Agricultural Union have resolved upon vigorous action to defeat the lock-out, and have invited Mr. Arch to take laborers to Canada. A judgment by the House of Lords authorises a continuance of divorce proceedings in the Mordaunt ease. A submarine cable has been successfully laid from Lisbon to Pernambuco, and is now open for business. The last New Zealand loan has been officially quoted. A Canadian four per cent, loan of four millions at ninety has been subscribed. The Sublime Porte has refused to ratify the contract for a Turkish loan of nineteen millions on terms announced. The failures of Snelgrove, a Mark Lane merchant, for £300,000, and a Belfast linen manufacturing firm, for nearly a million, ax’e reported. Wool continues firm. The arrivals for the llext series of sales amount to 130,000 bales. Wheat is drooping. Hemp, common to medium, has been sold at £l7 to £2-1. The Turkish ship Kars has sunk in the Sea of Marmora. Three hundred and twenty persons were drowned. Paris, June 20. The Assembly rejected further important claims in the Municipal Bill, hut the Government proceeded with themeasure, and claimed theright to nominate the Mayors. The Assembly eventually, by 358 to 329, adopted an amendment prolonging for two years the Government prerogative of nominating Mayors. Rome, June 20. The Pope, on receiving congratulations from the Sacred College, on the anniversary of his accession, said he had refused a proposal from a high personage for a reconciliation with the King of Italy, because he believed that any concession would be equally injurious to the Church and to society. Garibaldi is seriously ill at Caprera. Madrid, June 20. The Carlists concentrated their forces within entrenchments at Monte Jure, near Estella, in Navarre, hut the weather hindered operations by General Concha, the Republican Commander. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. WRECK OF THE TORRES STRAIT STEAMER FLINTSHIRE. Melbourne, June 21. The Torres Strait mail steamer Flintshire has been totally wweeked at Cleveland Bay, North Australia. All on hoard were saved. Madame Goddard and M. Blondin were passengers. They were all night in an open by which they reached the shore in safety, but they lost all their effects.
Three more bodies of those who were drowned on the wreck of the ship British Admiral have been found, and buried. One was recognised as the body of the secondofficer. A quantity of cargo has been washed ashore. Diphtheria is prevalent in the Maryborough district. The steamer Easby and the schooner Mera have arrived. They are intended to trade between Dunedin and Newcastle. Mr. Fulton, who was on board the Easby, has brought some valuable sheep. The Easby was carried by a current towards King’s Island, but saw a light in time to prevent her from being driven on shore. A private telegram states that the steamer Legislator had left Foo-chow-foo, with a cargo of the new season’s tea. She is expected to arrive about the middle of July. Arrived, June 21 : Alma, from "Westport. The markets are a little brisker. There have been large speculative purchases of kerosene ; Is. sd. is now asked for Devoc's. Bread-stuffs and grain are unaltered. All the passengers by the Flintshire wore landed safely. It is doubtful if the vessel can be saved. She struck on a ledge of rock at 5.30 on Monday afternoon, after leaving Townsville. The Assembly discussed the Constitution Bill in committee last night, as far ns the second clause. Sydney, The schooner Peri has been wrecked at Botany Bay Heads. The crew were saved. The steamer Mongol made the run to Hong Kong in eighteen days. Dibbs and Co., who became insolvent eight years ago, have paid all their creditors’ claims in full. A public agitation in favor of secular education has commenced. The inquiry into the conduct of the doctor of the Loch Awe has been concluded. Three witnesses were called by the doctor to show that he had attended them during sickness, and had shown them great kindness and gentlemanly behaviour. The depositions mil be forwarded to Wellington.
Alexandra, Tuesday. Tawhiao and a number of Kingites were here to-day, visiting stores. Napier, Tuesday.
A crowded meeting was held in the Council Chamber last night. A resolution was unanimously carried that the town of Napier be constituted a municipality. The Superintendent occupied the chair. One of the largest audiences ever seen in Napier assembled last night in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, on the occasion of the last appearance of the Kennedy family. Dunedin, Tuesday. Twelve thousand shares in the new Colonial Bank were yesterday applied for in Dunedin alone. The date of closing the lists in Otago is extended to the 21st July, on which day the share lists mil close throughout all the Provinces. Hokitika, Tuesday. The Tararua from Melbourne has gone to Greymouth, as the agent for McMeckan and Co. would not engage the tug Titan, though the steamer Waipara, his own boat, was on the beach.
