In the Supreme Court, to-day, in banco, in the case Fraser, H.M., v. lleid and Brett, proprietors of the Star, for criminal libel, counsel on behalf of defendants stated they should offer no objection to making the rule absolute. The rule was granted. Wright, a sergeant of the Armed Constabulary, a passenger by the Ladybird, has been charged with absenting himself without leave from the Taranaki station, and remanded back to Taranaki,
Alexander Brown, the youth who gave information to the police of having seen a man set fire to Hobson’s building, was arrested today on suspicion of being himself the perpetrator.
The Provincial Council was prorogued today. The Superintendent, in his speech, said that immigration would have his special attention, both in the superintendence of General Government immigration, and the appointments, where desirable, of Immigration Agents for the Province, In reference to the Education Tax ho said—lt is probable that the adjustment of the whole question of taxation, direct and indirect, in this Colony must soon take place. I hesitate to give consent on behalf of the Governor to a measure which will increase direct taxation in this Province, lest it prejudice or embarrass any action that may bo taken by the Colonial Legislature towards equalising the taxation of the country, embracing as such action, no doubt, will, provision for the educational requirements of the Colony, without the necessity for imposition, by Provincial legislation, of
direct taxation upon a section of the community. X have therefore reserved the Education Act for the Governor’s pleasure. Dr. Pollen was a passenger by the Ladybird. Mr. O’Rorkc leaves for Wellington on Saturday, G rakamstown, Wednesday. In the District Court, in the case of Donnelly v. Donnelly, a claim for £IOO for the detention of a letter, the plaintiff was nonsuited with costs. In Bankruptcy, Daniel Anno, butcher, had his certificate suspended for twelve months. The weather continues fearful. There has been no flood since Monday. Alexandra, Wednesday. Te Wbeoro and Patene returned last night from the meeting at Waitomo. There has been nothing definite decided between them and Tawhiao. Hokitika, Wednesday. The Provincial Executive has been ousted on a motion of want of confidence. Lyttelton, Wednesday. The ship Northampton was admitted to pratique yesterday. The health of the immigrants in hospital is progressing favorably. The s.s. Wellington arrived at the wharf at two o’clock, and is appointed to sail at four tomorrow (Thursday.) Port Chalmers, Wednesday.
Arrived—William Gifford, barque, from New York, 120 days, five passengers. Most of her cargo is for Auckland, whither she will sail after discharging the Dunedin portion. Sailed—Ship Durham, for Newcastle. Dunedin, Wednesday.
An important ease with reference to the inviolability of telegrams was brought before the Supreme Court in banco to-day. Mr. Macassey appeared on behalf of George Dodson, the plaintiff, in a case against the Superintendent and the Commissioner of Telegraphs, to show cause why certain telegrams should not he produced by them at the trial of the case, and why he, Dodson, should not be allowed to inspect and take copies of those telegrams.
