[Press Telegraph Agency.] Auckland, Friday. A diabolical attempt to bum down a fine block of brick buildings, called Hobson’s Buildings, in Shortland Street, was dis. covered last night. A man was observed to strike a match and light something under the doorway, and then run away. On examination there was found a quantity o£ paper and kerosene in a blaze. The culprit is unknown. It is believed the other fires lately were the act of an incendiary. The s.s. City of Adelaide is due in Auckland on the 20th inst. with the mails ex Mikado which proceeds to Sydney to dock, in consequence of grounding at Honolulu. The City* of Adelaide goes south, and returns on the Sth of July, proceeding to Sydney on the Sth. The s.s. Macgregor returns on tho sth of July, and leaves on the 6th for Kandavau, with mails and passengers ex the City of Adelaide, and returns with the mails ex Cyplirenes about the ISth. She then proceeds South, and afterwards goes through to San Francisco. New Plymouth, Friday. Capt. King’s funeral took place yesterday. He was buried in the vault of St. Mary’s Church, alongside the grave of his son, who was murdered by the Natives. The District Court was adjourned, and the public offices closed during tlie* afternoon, as a mark of respect. Mr. W. M. Burton has been appointed English Emigration Agent. He goes Home by tlie San Francisco mail steamer. Blenheim, Friday. Arthur Fiven was drowned yesterday whilst carrying the mail to Picton, at Mudford’s Flat, in the swamps, owing to the flood in the Koromiko stream. Dunedin, Friday. The origin of tlie fire in Reid’s store, Stafford street, is still undiscovered. The following is a correct list of the insurances :—Reid —£soo with the Norwich Union, £I,OOO with the South British, £SOO with the New Zealand, and £SOO with the Standard. Brown’s Buildings—£soo, -with the South British. Mr. V. 7 . H. Cutten and Captain Boyd left in the s.s. Phoebe, yesterday, for the North as a deputation from the new Colonial Bank to co-operate with the various local committee formed throughout the Colony. Seventy thousand shares in the new Colonial Bank have been applied for in Otago and Southland alone. New shares have beeu applied for throughout the Province. Invercargill, Friday. Tlie Supreme Court was opened to-day. W. A. Davidson pleaded guilty to taking money, and was sentenced to eighteen months’ hard labor. Frank Golding pleaded guilty* to stealing a watch, and was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labor. In the case of H. Die* mond, charged with assault with intent to commit a robbery, the jury returned a verdict of “Not Guilty,” without leaving the box.
